30 poems in 30 days from keith's ramblings

In 2008 I was set a challenge to come up with thirty poems in thirty days. I don't particularly enjoy writing poems but I thought I'd have a go just the same! I look forward to welcoming you at keith's ramblings where I feel far more at home!

I was recently set a challenge by UL to write a poem a day during April.
,
My somewhat negative views on poetry are well documented, but I'm never one to turn down such a chance, so from tomorrow I guess I'll have to put my thinking hat on and start!
/
In the meantime I'm having a practice lap so to speak! These are my thoughts.

Thirty poems she asked for
So thirty poems she’ll get.
At least that’s the plan
I will if I can
A decision I might just regret!

Some verse will have to be funny
And others a little bit sad
Some will be long
Some will go wrong
Some will be horribly bad.

Tomorrows the day
I have to start
In twenty four hours I’ll begin
I’ll give it a shot
It’s rather a lot
My head is starting to spin.

Thirty days in April
A poem every day
What shall I write?
It’s gonna be tight
Roll on the first of May!

You would have thought that if someone had suggested to me five weeks ago I should write a poem every day for a month, I would have laughed in their face! Apart from the fact that I would not have considered myself capable, my somewhat negative views on poetry made me a bit of a non-starter!

Then up popped UL. And I didn’t laugh in her face. I don’t know how she did it, but she persuaded me to have a go. And I will be eternally grateful to her for doing so..

My poetry could be best described as ramshackle! One of the reasons that I got annoyed with poetry was because of its apparent dependence on rules and formulae

I don’t write Haiku, Pantoum or Sonnet

I don’t do Cinquain, Quatrain or OdeDiamante,

Villanelle doesn’t really ring my bell

You can keep yourSeptalet, Rondelet, Ghazel and Terzanelle!

No, I’m a rebel and I write as I think. Just like life, sometimes it rhymes others it doesn’t. If it works, it’s more by luck than judgement! I got dozens of comments on my thirty ditties. Almost without exception they were favourable. But I am not so naive as to believe that all readers of my poems enjoyed them and I’m pretty sure than many visitors took one look then scuttled off saying ‘what the hell was that all about?!

But at the end of the day (I swore I would never use that expression) I really truly enjoyed myself. Don’t worry though, I won’t continue to post a verse every day! I’ve put you through enough! But I will keep on writing poems with a renewed enthusiasm.
